dermabrasion
Dermabrasion refers to a procedure that uses mechanical means (as opposed to laser or chemical means) to resurface deep layers of the skin to restore a healthier, more youthful, and even texture to the skin of the face, neck, and hands. The resurfacing removes fine lines and greatly diminish deeper ones by removing the top, and damaged, layers of skin that contain hyperpigmentation and fine lines. Dermabrasion works similarly to sand paper on rough wood. Small layers are peeled away to make the face even in texture and color. Due to the intensity of the procedure, a sedation is commonly given to the patient to tolerate the procedure without discomfort.
Dermabrasion skin resurfacing is commonly performed in conjunction with face lift, eye lid, and brow lift procedures.
Recovery time varies with the intensity of the dermabrasion session and the extent of results needed. Recovery may take 10 to 14 days for the initial healing, followed by a prolonged period of pink skin that may last up to 3 to 6 months in people. Make-up may be worn after the first week or two. The skin will need to be diligently treated for a period before and after the resurfacing to help obtain the best results possible.
Pre-treating the skin prior to resurfacing is critical in obtaining the best results possible. We provide our patients with the skin care products they will need to prepare their skin for optimal results as well as the products needed to maintain their youthful results after the procedure has been performed.
